Our work is done
On Sunday, November 9 the Rector Search Team agreed unanimously and enthusiastically that the Rev. Charles Sumner Weiss should be called as the next rector of Christ Church. When we realized that we were unanimous in our discernment, the Parish Hall was filled with happy yells, hoots and claps.
On November 10, we presented our recommendation to the vestry in detail. For our decision we had returned to the Parish Profile and the summation of what qualities Christ Church parishioners believed to be most important:
- Dynamic preacher and skillful communicator
- Spiritual leadership
- Personally engaging and friendly
- Works well and enthusiastically with youth
We believes he meets and exceeds those qualifications. “He also has the range of experience, energy level and appreciation for the diversity of our parish that makes him ‘a perfect fit’ for Christ Church Dover, according to his current senior warden. He also is familiar with and has many friends in Delaware, having served as assistant rector of Christ Church Christiana Hundred from 1997-2002,” we stated in our recommendation.
After their many questions were answered, the vestry unanimously agreed to extend the call to Father Chuck.
In late October during the interview phase, three of us journeyed to Pittsburgh to meet with Father Chuck and his wife, Martha, for dinner and attend his small church in Canonsburg, Pa., the next day. Tina Schaeffer, Richard Waters and Lee Ann Walling also met with the senior warden and other references and gauged the spirituality of the Sunday service, which featured a baptism that morning, and listened to Father Chuck’s sermon.
The Saturday night dinner extended beyond two hours, and it was clear that both Father Chuck and Martha were very engaged in their own discernment. Besides a list of questions one might expect a candidate to ask, Father Chuck asked us each very penetrating questions about our own involvement with Christ Church and he asked those types of questions during his three-hour interview – part of a two-day visit that included tours, meeting staff, meeting with the wardens and treasurer, and multiple meals with various members of the Search Team and Archdeacon Pat Malcolm.
Back in September, we conducted a mock interview with a clergy member from New Castle County. At that point, we were wondering how we were going to choose the “right” candidate. His simple answer to us was “You will know.” As the process unfolded, he was absolutely correct. We believe the parishioners of Christ Church will love Father Chuck and grow in faith and as disciples in Christ by his ministry to us.
He is the one we seek.
